Antique Wooden Egg Holder
I want to show you this fun project anyone can do with scrap wood. It can be any size. Mine will hold 14 eggs. I was inspired by the Downton Abbey show on PBS (a British historical drama series). Don’t know if you have watched it, but they have several things in their kitchen that I would love in mine. One of those is a huge wooden tray that holds eggs.
Phil and I have 7 laying hens, so we get quite a few fresh eggs. Did you know that you can leave fresh unwashed eggs out at room temperature for up to 2 weeks? “Eggs are laid with a natural coating on the shell called the ‘bloom’ or ‘cuticle’. This coating is the first line of defense in keeping air and bacteria out of the egg. Eggshells are porous, so when you wash them you’re removing that natural barrier.” (from https://thankchickens.com)
So let’s make an egg tray to hold our beautiful brown, blue, green, cream, and everything in between, colored eggs!
Wood dimensions: Any wood would work. I am using 2-inch rough barn wood.
1- 16” x 5 1/2’ piece of wood
2- 6” x 5 1/2” piece of wood

Can I store fresh eggs at room temperature? Yes, unwashed freshly-laid eggs from backyard chickens or a local farm can safely be stored at room temperature for several days or even a couple of weeks. We love to display some of our hen’s gorgeous collection of eggs in a wire basket or ceramic egg tray on the counter!
